Limestone slot canyon with bridges over waterfalls — a frozen wonderland in winter.

What to Expect

Maligne Canyon is a 50-metre-deep limestone slot canyon cut by the Maligne River, crossed by six bridges that put you directly above plunging waterfalls and potholes. In summer it's a dramatic, easy walk; in winter the river freezes into a labyrinth of blue ice and frozen falls.

Guided winter ice walks descend into the canyon floor itself, where you walk among the frozen waterfalls that summer visitors only glimpse from above. It's one of Jasper's signature winter experiences.

Best Time to Visit

May–October for the summer bridge walk; December–March for guided ice walks on the frozen canyon floor.

Practical Tips

The canyon is 11 km from Jasper townsite on the Maligne Lake Road. The First Bridge loop is short and easy; deeper bridges add distance. Winter ice walks onto the canyon floor require a guide and cleats.

Where to Stay

Jasper townsite has hotels, cabins and hostels within walking distance of trails; the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge sits lakeside just outside town.
