Moraine Lake & the Valley of the Ten Peaks
The other iconic turquoise lake, ringed by ten glacier-capped peaks.
What to Expect
Moraine Lake is the second of the Lake Louise area's famous turquoise jewels, set at the base of the Valley of the Ten Peaks — the scene that once graced the Canadian $20 bill. The Rockpile Trail climbs a short staircase to a viewpoint over the lake and peaks.
Beyond the viewpoint, the Consolation Lakes trail and the more strenuous Larch Valley/Sentinel Pass hikes branch deeper into the alpine. In late September the larches turn gold, making this one of the most sought-after hikes in the Rockies.
Best Time to Visit
June–October (the road closes in winter); late September for golden larches — book transit months ahead.
Practical Tips
Private vehicles are NOT permitted on the Moraine Lake road — you must use the Parks Canada shuttle, the Lake Louise Transit, or a guided tour, all booked in advance. Reserve transit the moment bookings open for summer dates.
Where to Stay
The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise sits on the lakeshore; Lake Louise village a few minutes down the road has mid-range and budget lodges and a hostel.
