Banff vs Jasper
Banff and Jasper are the two anchors of the Canadian Rockies, linked by the Icefields Parkway. They share geology but offer very different trips. Here's how to choose.
Best For
Banff is the bustling, classic choice — first-timers, families and visitors who want a lively town, easily accessible lakes (Lake Louise, Moraine Lake) and the most photographed scenery in Canada. Jasper is the quieter, wilder choice — hikers, wildlife watchers, dark-sky stargazers and anyone who wants to escape the summer crowds. If you have time, do both: the drive between them is the point.
Cost
Banff is noticeably more expensive — peak-summer hotels in the town can be 30-50% pricier than Jasper, and food and parking fill up faster. Jasper offers better mid-range value and lower park-camping pressure. Both charge the same Parks Canada entry fee.
Lodging
Banff has a wider range, from backpacker hostels to the Fairmont Banff Springs and Chateau Lake Louise, plus dozens of mid-range hotels in town. Jasper has fewer but more relaxed options — the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, independent lodges and cabins, and quieter campgrounds. Book both early for summer.
Activities
Banff: Lake Louise and Moraine Lake (book the shuttle), the Banff Gondola, Upper Hot Springs, Sulphur Mountain boardwalk and Tunnel Mountain hikes. Jasper: Maligne Lake cruise to Spirit Island, Maligne Canyon, the Jasper SkyTram, and the Skyline Trail (a multi-day hut-to-hut hike). Jasper's wildlife viewing (elk, bear, moose) is generally better.
Getting There & Around
Banff is 90 minutes from Calgary's international airport — the easiest Rockies access in Canada. Jasper is a 4-hour drive from Edmonton, or a scenic 5+ hour drive from Calgary via the Icefields Parkway. No gas between Lake Louise and Jasper — fill up first.
Weather
Identical mountain climate. Summer highs 18-22C, crisp mornings; winter lows -15 to -25C. Banff gets marginally more sun and slightly less snow in town; Jasper is colder and snowier. Both are best June to September, with winter skiing December to April.
The Verdict
Choose Banff for the iconic lakes and a lively mountain town on a first trip. Choose Jasper for wilderness, wildlife and quiet. With 5+ days, do the Icefields Parkway and stay in both — they are different chapters of the same story.
