About Jasper

Jasper is what Banff used to be before the world found out about it - a quieter, less polished, more genuinely wild mountain town at the northern end of the Icefields Parkway. The townsite of 4,500 sits inside Jasper National Park, the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies at 11,000 square kilometres, and the dark-sky preserve that makes it one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights. Where Banff feels curated, Jasper feels lived-in. The downtown is a few blocks of practical shops, a brewery, a bookstore, and restaurants that serve locals as well as tourists. The surrounding park is less developed than Banff's - fewer gondolas, fewer paved viewpoints, more backcountry. Maligne Lake, 44 km south, is the longest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies and home to Spirit Island, the most photographed spot in the park. Miette Hot Springs, 60 km northeast, are the hottest springs in the Rockies. The Icefields Parkway connecting Jasper to Lake Louise is routinely called one of the most scenic drives on earth - 230 km of glaciers, waterfalls, mountain goats and roadside elk. Jasper is also the terminus of the Rocky Mountaineer train route from Vancouver, making it one of the few mountain towns you can reach without a car. In October, the Jasper Dark Sky Festival draws astronomers and stargazers from across the continent; in winter, Marmot Basin offers uncrowded skiing with no lift lines.
