Alberta for First-Timers: 12 Things to Know Before You Go

Alberta is Canada's mountain province — the Rockies, two real cities, and prairies that stretch to the horizon. If it's your first visit, here are twelve things worth knowing.

1. It's bigger than you think: Alberta is the size of Texas. The drive from Calgary to Jasper is 5 hours; from Edmonton to the US border, 6.

2. A car is essential: there's no rail and limited transit between the cities and parks. Rent at the airport.

3. Two main cities: Calgary (mountain-side, rodeo culture) and Edmonton (northern, festival city, with the world's biggest mall). The Rockies are 1–4 hours west of Calgary.

4. Parks passes: you need a Parks Canada pass to stop anywhere in Banff, Jasper, or the other mountain parks. Buy it online or at the gate.

5. The weather swings fast: 'if you don't like the weather, wait 20 minutes' is an Alberta proverb. Calgary gets chinooks that warm it 20°C in hours. Pack layers, always.

6. Bears are real: Banff and Jasper have both grizzly and black bears. Carry bear spray on every trail, make noise, and never approach.

7. Currency: Canadian dollars. Cards everywhere; carry cash for mountain-town parking and parks passes.

8. Tipping: 15–18% at restaurants on the pre-tax total. GST (5%) is added automatically.

9. The altitude: Banff sits at 1,400 m, the trails higher. Drink water, pace yourself for a day, and watch for altitude effects if you're active.

10. The Stampede is July: the first two weeks of July, Calgary throws the world's biggest rodeo. Book accommodations a year ahead if you want to go.

11. The Icefields Parkway is the drive: the 230 km between Lake Louise and Jasper is one of the most scenic roads on earth. Don't rush it — budget a full day with stops.

12. Get out of the towns. The best of Alberta is on the trails, the parkways, and the backroads. The mountains are the reason you came — go into them.
