Toronto is one of the easiest Canadian cities to use as a base for a fall road trip. Within a few hours, the city gives way to maple forests, escarpment lookouts, cottage country, vineyards and small towns that are at their best when the leaves change.
If your priority is scenery rather than distance, these routes offer the best mix of colour, places to stop and easy overnight options.
1. Toronto to Muskoka
Muskoka is the classic Ontario fall escape. The drive north becomes increasingly scenic past Barrie, with granite outcrops, lakes and dense hardwood forest replacing the city landscape.
Base yourself around Huntsville, Bracebridge or Gravenhurst. Huntsville works especially well if you want to combine the trip with Algonquin Park.
Best for: lakes, cottage-country scenery and a relaxed weekend.

2. Toronto to Algonquin Provincial Park
For pure forest colour, Algonquin is hard to beat. Highway 60 crosses the southern part of the park and gives access to lakes, lookouts and short walking trails.
The route works best as an overnight trip rather than a rushed day drive. Leave Toronto early, stop in Huntsville, continue into the park and stay nearby so you can enjoy the morning light the following day.
Best for: photographers, hikers and first-time fall visitors.
Pair the drive with our national parks guide and road trips in Canada.
3. Toronto to the Niagara Escarpment
You do not need to drive far north to see good fall colour. The Niagara Escarpment offers cliffs, waterfalls and forest within easy reach of Toronto.
A practical route is Toronto to Hamilton, then west toward Dundas and the escarpment before continuing toward Niagara-on-the-Lake or Niagara Falls.
Hamilton is especially useful for short hikes and waterfall stops. If you continue to Niagara, you can combine autumn scenery with wineries and one of Canada's most famous attractions.
Explore Niagara Falls, hotels in Niagara Falls and things to do in Niagara Falls.
4. Toronto to Prince Edward County
Prince Edward County combines fall colour with wineries, farm stands, lake views and small-town dining. The landscape is gentler than Muskoka or Algonquin, but the trip is excellent for couples and food-focused weekends.
Take Highway 401 east, then leave the highway for the slower county roads around Picton, Wellington and Bloomfield.
Best for: couples, wine weekends and easy touring without long hikes.
5. Toronto to Blue Mountain and Collingwood
The Georgian Bay area is another strong option for a one- or two-night trip. The escarpment around Blue Mountain gives you elevated viewpoints, while nearby Collingwood has restaurants and a walkable downtown.
For a longer loop, continue through the Beaver Valley before returning toward Toronto.
Best for: a mix of scenery, dining and resort-style lodging.
6. Toronto to the Kawarthas
The Kawarthas are a quieter alternative to Muskoka. Lakes, rolling farmland and small towns make this route especially good if you want a fall drive without the same level of weekend traffic.
Peterborough is an easy base, with access to the Trent-Severn Waterway and nearby lake country.
See our Peterborough guide for trip-planning ideas.
How to choose the right fall drive
Choose Muskoka or Algonquin if your main goal is dramatic forest colour. Pick Niagara if you want attractions and wineries alongside the scenery. Prince Edward County is strongest for food and couples, while the Kawarthas are better for a quieter pace.
For a one-night trip, stay within roughly two to three hours of Toronto. For Algonquin or a longer Muskoka loop, two nights gives you much more flexibility.
Turn the drive into a weekend trip
The easiest way to make a fall road trip feel less rushed is to pick one overnight base rather than constantly changing hotels. Search our best hotels in Canada, browse weekend getaways, or use the trip planner to build a route around your available time.
