Suspended catwalks over waterfalls and a frozen blue-ice canyon in winter.
What to Expect
Johnston Canyon is one of Banff's most popular hikes, threading a limestone slot canyon on suspended catwalks over a rushing creek and a chain of waterfalls. The Lower Falls (1.1 km) pour into a deep pool viewed through a natural rock tunnel; the Upper Falls (2.7 km) cascade 40 metres down a sheer cliff.
In winter the creek and falls freeze into a cathedral of blue ice, making the guided ice walk one of Banff's signature cold-season experiences. Beyond the Upper Falls, the steep Ink Pots trail climbs to seven mineral springs of vivid colour in a quiet meadow.
Best Time to Visit
May–October for the summer catwalk hike; December–March for guided ice walks on the frozen falls.
Practical Tips
Johnston Canyon is a 25-minute drive west of Banff on the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A). The trailhead parking fills by mid-morning in summer — arrive before 9 am or take the Roam bus. The Lower and Upper Falls trails are open year-round; winter ice walks onto the frozen canyon floor require cleats and a guide.
Where to Stay
Banff townsite offers everything from the iconic Fairmont Banff Springs castle to hostels and mid-range lodges, most within walking distance of downtown and the Bow River.
