CanadaComparisonsToronto vs Montreal

Best For

Toronto is best for first-timers who want the big-city greatest hits — the CN Tower, the waterfront, world museums (ROM, AGO) and unmatched multicultural neighbourhoods. Montreal is best for travellers who want European atmosphere, a serious food scene and a walkable, bilingual, creative city. It is smaller, more intimate and more distinctive.

Cost

Toronto is more expensive — hotels, dining and parking run 15-25% higher. Montreal offers strong value for a major city, especially in food and neighbourhood dining. Both are cheaper than Vancouver.

Lodging

Toronto: downtown and the Entertainment District for convenience; Yorkville for luxury; the West End for value. Montreal: Old Montreal for romance and boutique hotels; the Plateau and Mile End for local atmosphere and lower prices.

Activities

Toronto: CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario, St. Lawrence Market, the Distillery District, Toronto Islands ferry and Kensington Market. Montreal: Old Montreal and Notre-Dame Basilica, Mount Royal, the Jean-Talon Market, Mile End bagels, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Plateau's murals.

Getting There & Around

Both have excellent international airports (YYZ, YUL) and good public transit (TTC, STM metro). Toronto is larger and more spread out; Montreal is more walkable and bikeable. Neither needs a car if you stay central.

Weather

Toronto is slightly milder year-round — hotter, more humid summers and slightly less cold winters. Montreal has colder, snowier winters (-10 to -15C typical) and warm, humid summers. Both are best May to October; Montreal's winter is magical but demanding.

The Verdict

Choose Toronto for the big, global, multicultural city experience. Choose Montreal for European atmosphere, food and a more intimate scale. With a week, split your time — the flight is 70 minutes.
