Quebec City vs Montreal
Both are French-speaking Quebec cities, but they are completely different trips. Montreal is a creative, cosmopolitan metropolis; Quebec City is a walled, European-feeling old town of 500,000.
Best For
Quebec City is best for romance, history and a European feel without flying to Europe — the only walled city north of Mexico. Montreal is best for food, nightlife, neighbourhoods and a bigger-city cultural buzz. It is the more versatile, more cosmopolitan choice.
Cost
Quebec City is slightly more expensive forlodging inside the walls in peak season, but cheaper overall than Montreal. Montreal offers more budget options across its neighbourhoods. Both are reasonable value for major cities.
Lodging
Quebec City: stay inside the walls for the full fairy-tale atmosphere (Auberge Saint-Antoine, Hotel 71). Montreal: Old Montreal for romance, the Plateau for local atmosphere. Both have strong boutique scenes.
Activities
Quebec City: walk the Dufferin Terrace and fortified walls, Quartier Petit Champlain, the Chateau Frontenac, the Plains of Abraham and a day trip to Ile d'Orleans and Montmorency Falls. Montreal: Old Montreal, Mount Royal, the Jean-Talon Market, Mile End bagels, museums and a sprawling food and nightlife scene.
Getting There & Around
Montreal has the bigger airport (YUL) and a metro. Quebec City (YQB) has fewer direct flights; many visitors fly to Montreal and take the 3-hour train or drive. Both are walkable in the centre; neither needs a car for the city itself.
Weather
Both are cold, snowy in winter and warm in summer. Quebec City is colder and snowier (more northerly, more continental), with winter lows regularly below -15C. Both are magical under snow; both best May to October.
The Verdict
Choose Quebec City for a short, romantic, European-feeling break. Choose Montreal for a longer, food-and-culture city trip. They are 3 hours apart — combine them in one Quebec trip if you have a week.
