Two days inside the only walled city north of Mexico — cobblestone lanes, the Château Frontenac, Montmorency Falls, and where to stay in the old town.
Quebec City is the closest you'll get to Europe without crossing the Atlantic — a walled French-colonial town of cobblestone lanes, copper spires, and a fairytale hotel perched above a river. Two days is enough to fall for it. Here's the perfect weekend.
Day 1 — Inside the walls Start at Place Royale, the cobbled square where Samuel de Champlain founded the settlement in 1608. Climb the Escalier Casse-Cou (Breakneck Stairs) up to the Château Frontenac — the most photographed hotel in the world, and worth every frame. Walk the Dufferin Terrace for St. Lawrence River views, then duck into the Quartier Petit Champlain for boutiques and a crepe lunch. Spend the afternoon walking the Fortifications, the only preserved city walls north of Mexico. End with dinner in a French bistro on rue Saint-Jean — order the bison, the duck, or anything with a maple glaze.
Day 2 — The falls and the island Drive 15 minutes to Montmorency Falls — at 83 metres, they're 30 metres taller than Niagara and far less crowded. Take the cable car up and walk the suspension bridge over the crest. Back in town, ferry across to Île d'Orléans for cideries, berry farms, and roadside fromageries. If you have an extra hour, the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and the Canyon Sainte-Anne are a short drive further east.
Where to stay Stay inside the walls (Upper Town) for the full fairytale effect, or in Lower Town near Place Royale for quieter, cheaper rooms. Either way, walk everywhere — driving inside the old city is more hassle than it's worth.
Good to know Most locals speak French; English is widely understood in the tourist zone but a 'bonjour' goes a long way. Quebec City gets genuinely cold in winter — pack for it, or come in summer when the streets are alive with street performers and patios.
