The SS Klondike, Miles Canyon, Carcross Desert, and a midnight-sun float on the Yukon River — the Yukon's small capital in three days.

Whitehorse, the Yukon's capital, is the smallest capital in Canada — a frontier town of 30,000 on the Yukon River, two hours from the Alaska border, and the jumping-off point for the rest of the territory. It's the easiest Yukon introduction, and a long weekend here gives you a real taste of the North. Here's the itinerary.

Day 1 — Whitehorse Start on the Yukon River — the Millennium Trail follows the river through town, past the SS Klondike, a restored 1930s sternwheeler and the Yukon's icon. Visit the MacBride Museum for the Gold Rush history and the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre for the Indigenous story. In the evening, the Yukon Brewing taproom or one of the surprisingly good downtown restaurants.

Day 2 — Carcross and the south Drive an hour south to Carcross — the 'Caribou Crossing' Gold Rush town, with the world's smallest desert (the Carcross Desert) and the spectacular Emerald Lake. Continue to the Tutshi and Tagish Lakes for the landscape. In Carcross, the Carcross/Tagish First Nation's carving and the 'Snow White' mountains are the draw.

Day 3 — Miles Canyon and the river Walk the Miles Canyon suspension bridge — the Gold Rush route where stampeders had to shoot the rapids or portage — and the Canyon City trail. Then a float or canoe on the Yukon River (in summer, under the midnight sun, the light lasts till midnight). If you have an extra day, drive south to the Alaska Highway and the BC border for the signpost.

When to go Summer (June–August) for the midnight sun and green; September for the fall colour; February–March for the aurora and the festivals (the Yukon Quest sled dog race ends in Whitehorse in February). Winter is cold (-30°C) but bright and active.

Where to stay Downtown Whitehorse for walkability and restaurants; a riverside cabin for quiet. Summer and aurora season book out — reserve ahead.

Good to know Whitehorse is a 2-hour flight from Vancouver. A car is essential for anything outside town. And the summer light is disorienting — bring an eye mask.
