Three days on Canada's smallest province — Charlottetown's historic streets, Cavendish's red-sand dunes, and the points-east coastal drive.

Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province — and arguably its most charming. Red cliffs, green farmland, blue sea, and a slow island pace make it a perfect long-weekend escape. You can drive the whole island in a day; better to take three. Here's the itinerary.

Day 1 — Charlottetown Start in the capital, a compact city of Victorian streets and the birthplace of Confederation. Walk the historic downtown, see Province House (where Canada was debated in 1864), and have lunch on the waterfront. In the evening, catch a show at the Confederation Centre of the Arts — Anne of Green Gables: The Musical runs all summer.

Day 2 — The north shore Drive 40 minutes to Cavendish and PEI National Park — the island's signature landscape of rolling dunes, red sand, and Green Gables country. Tour the Green Gables Heritage Place (the farmhouse that inspired the novel), walk the dune trails at Cavendish Beach, and watch the sun set over the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Day 3 — The points east Take the Points East Coastal Drive through fishing villages, lighthouses, and uncrowded beaches. Stop at Panmure Island, the Wood Islands lighthouse, and the beaches of Basin Head Provincial Park (the 'singing sands'). Eat lobster on a dock. End the day with a ferry or drive back to Charlottetown.

Where to stay Charlottetown for restaurants and walkability; Cavendish for beach and theme-park energy in summer; a coastal inn or cottage on the east or west point for quiet. Book early — PEI's short season (June–September) fills fast.

Good to know You can arrive by the 13-km Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick, by ferry from Nova Scotia, or by air to Charlottetown. A car is essential — there's no island-wide transit. And eat the seafood: lobster, Malpeque oysters, and mussels are why you came.
