A UNESCO World Heritage Site of brightly painted 18th-century wooden houses on a steep hillside above a perfect harbour — the home of the Bluenose.
Lunenburg is one of the most beautiful towns in Canada — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of brightly painted 18th-century wooden houses on a steep hillside above a perfect harbour. Founded in 1753 by German, Swiss, and French settlers, it's the best-preserved British colonial town in North America and the home of the Bluenose, Canada's most famous schooner. Here's the guide.
Old Town Walk the steep streets of the Old Town — every house is a different colour, the pattern a tradition from the fishing days so sailors could find home in the fog. The architecture is 'Germanic' — solid wooden houses, dormer windows, and a deep harbourfront. Take the walking tour; the history is dense.
The Bluenose The original Bluenose — the undefeated racing schooner on the Canadian dime — was built here in 1921. The Bluenose II replica sails in summer; see it in the harbour or book a sailing. The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, on the waterfront, tells the story.
The Ironworks and the distillery Lunenburg is a craft town. Ironworks Distillery (in an old marine ironworks) makes small-batch rum and gin; the Lunenburg Maple Balsamic is a souvenir. The Lunenburg Foundry still works metal for the fishing fleet.
The harbour and the sea Take a harbour tour, eat lobster at the wharf, and walk the waterfront trail. Whale-watching and sailing trips run from the dock. The ocean is the reason the town exists.
When to go May to October. July and August for the sailing and festivals; September–October for fall colour and fewer crowds. The town is small; book accommodations early in summer.
Good to know Lunenburg is a 90-minute drive from Halifax. Pair it with Peggy's Cove, Mahone Bay, and Chester for a full South Shore day. And eat the Lunenburg pudding (a local sausage) if you find it.
