Eating Alberta: Beef, Bison and Calgary's Food Scene

Alberta is ranch country — Canada's beef heartland — but its food scene goes well beyond the steak. Calgary and Edmonton are two of Canada's most underrated food cities, and the mountain towns hold their own. Here's what to eat.

The beef Alberta beef is the province's edible signature — grass-fed, grain-finished, and on every menu. Order a ribeye or a striploin at a Calgary steakhouse (River Café or Caesar's are the classics). For the casual version, a Calgary beef dip or a bison burger is everywhere. And don't skip the Alberta beef jerky at roadside stops.

Bison and game Bison is leaner, richer, and very Albertan — find it as steaks, burgers, and sausages. Elk and venison are common too, often with a berry sauce (saskatoon berries are the local fruit).

Calgary and Edmonton food scenes Calgary's Inglewood and Beltline districts are where the good restaurants cluster — modern Canadian, farm-to-table, and excellent craft beer. Edmonton's Whyte Avenue and 124th Street are the equivalent. Both cities have a strong Vietnamese, Filipino, and South Asian food presence — Edmonton's pho and Filipino joints are a regional specialty.

The Stampede food In July, the Calgary Stampede food is its own experience — mini donuts, corn dogs, and the famous 'deep-fried everything.' Lean in for one day.

Mountain town dining Banff and Jasper have surprisingly good restaurants — look for the ones doing regional cuisine (bison, trout, foraged mushrooms). The fondue and après-ski scene in winter is a tradition.

When to eat Lunch for the famous steakhouses (cheaper, no reservation needed). Stampede week books out; reserve months ahead for July. And pair the beef with an Alberta craft beer — the province has a strong brewing scene.
