Spring blooms in Victoria, summer on the coast, fall foliage in the Okanagan, and winter powder in Whistler — when to go for what you love.

British Columbia is a big province with two coastlines and a wall of mountains in between, so there's no single best time to visit — it depends entirely on what you came for. Here's how to choose.

Spring (March – May) The quietest, most underrated season. Victoria and the Gulf Islands explode with blooms — the city runs an annual flower count in March — while the ski hills stay open into April. Shoulder-season hotel rates make this a savvy pick. Pack for anything; rain is likely on the coast.

Summer (June – August) Peak season, and for good reason. The coast basks in 20–25°C days, alpine trails shed their snow, and the Okanagan hits 30°C and pool weather. This is when to hike, kayak, and road-trip the high country. Book accommodations months ahead, and expect crowds in Whistler, Tofino, and the Rockies-adjacent parks.

Fall (September – October) The locals' favourite. Crowds thin, the Okanagan harvest is in full swing with wine festivals, and the larches turn gold in the high country. Weather is mild and stable through September; October brings rain to the coast and the first snow to the mountains.

Winter (December – February) Powder hounds head to Whistler, Revelstoke, and the Kootenays — BC ski resorts average 10–12 metres of snow a season. Cities stay mild and wet on the coast (it rarely drops below freezing in Vancouver), while the interior goes deep cold and crisp. It's also aurora season in the province's far north.

The bottom line Come in summer for the full alpine and coastal experience, in fall for wine and larches, in winter for snow, and in spring for quiet and value. Avoid nothing — BC rewards every season if you pack for it.
