Why Vancouver is the perfect weekend base
Few cities in Canada let you finish work on Friday and be on a mountain, an island, or a Pacific beach by Saturday lunch. Vancouver sits at the foot of the Coast Mountains and the edge of the Salish Sea, so a two-hour drive or a short ferry ride puts you in completely different country — alpine villages, rainforest, wine country, and old-growth coast. Whistler — mountains in two hours
Whistler is 120 km north of Vancouver along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, about a two-hour drive when traffic is clear. In winter it is the obvious pick — skiing, snowboarding, and the Scandinave Spa. In summer the same lifts carry mountain bikes and hikers, and Lost Lake warms up enough to swim.
Two-day plan: Drive up Friday evening, ski or hike Saturday, and spend Sunday on the Valley Trail or at Alta Lake. Victoria and the Gulf Islands — a ferry across the strait
Victoria is a 90-minute ferry from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, plus a 30-minute drive into the city. It feels different from the mainland — slower, greener, and full of British-colonial charm. Walk the Inner Harbour, visit the Royal BC Museum, and have afternoon tea at the Empress. If you have a car, keep going up the Saanich Peninsula or catch a smaller ferry to Salt Spring Island for a truly off-grid weekend.

Tofino and Ucluelet — Pacific rainforest and surf
Tofino is the wild-card weekend: a five- to six-hour drive from Vancouver (including a ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay in Nanaimo), but the payoff is long sandy beaches, old-growth rainforest in Pacific Rim National Park, and winter storm-watching. It is the best weekend in the province for surfers and anyone who wants to unplug.
Two-day plan: Drive up Friday, surf or walk Long Beach Saturday, and do the Rainforest Trail on Sunday morning before the drive back. Stay at a beachfront cabin or resort — Tofino has everything from the Wickaninnish Inn to waterfront cabins.
The Okanagan — wine, lakes and sun
The Okanagan is a four-hour drive from Vancouver via the Coquihalla, and it is the province's sunbelt. Kelowna is the main hub on Okanagan Lake; Penticton sits between two lakes and is the best base for winery-hopping; Osoyoos has Canada's warmest lake. Squamish and the Sea-to-Sky — adventure on the way
If you only have one night, Squamish is 45 minutes up the Sea-to-Sky and packs a full weekend into less driving. Hike the Stawamus Chief, climb at the Smoke Bluffs, or ride mountain-bike trails above town. It is the easiest outdoor weekend from Vancouver and the natural stop on the way to Whistler.
How to plan your Vancouver weekend
- Drive times are best-case. Add 30 to 60 minutes on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, especially on the Sea-to-Sky and through the Massey Tunnel.
- Ferries need reservations. Book BC Ferries in advance for Victoria and Nanaimo on summer weekends — wait times for the next sailing can be two hours.
- Mountain weather changes fast. Pack layers for Whistler and Tofino even in July; the coast can be 10°C cooler than the city.
- Rent a car. Most of these trips are hard on transit. A rental car gives you the flexibility to combine stops.
When to go
Whistler is best December to March for skiing and July to September for hiking; the Okanagan shines June to September; Tofino is magical year-round but peak for surf in winter; Victoria is lovely April to October.
